Odisha bag 3 medals in National Grappling Championship

A four-member Odisha squad bagged one gold, one silver and one bronze medals in the 8th National Grappling Championship, which was held at Rohtak University in Haryana from Nov 27 to 29. Srikant Sekhar won the gold in men’s 85kg equipped category and the silver in unequipped category.

Priyadarshini Ghatuari secured the bronze in women’s 58kg equipped category. This was for the first time that Odisha participated in the National grappling championship. Grappling was introduced in Odisha by newly formed Odisha Grappling Association (OGA) with karate exponents Gouri Mohanty and Hari Prasad Pattanayak as its president and secretary respectively.

OGA started its operation by organising a coaching camp at Utkal Karate School, Bhubaneswar earlier on November 22 and 23. The camp was conducted to select Odisha squad for the 8th National Championship. According to OGA secretary, altogeter 70 sportspersons participated in the state camp, which was supervised by Shaker Saberi of Afghanistan.
